Step 1: The Most Common Contemporary Gospel and R&B Chord Progression, the 1-6-4-5 Progression. The first step in playing Contemporary Gospel and R&B on the piano is to pick a simple chord progression. One of students’ biggest misconceptions about the Contemporary Gospel & R&B genre is that it has a lot of big, sophisticated chords.Perfect Fifth. A perfect fifth is an interval of seven semitones (half steps) between 2 notes. For example, if you play a C on the piano followed by the G above it then you will have just played an example of a perfect fifth: The G is 7 semitones higher than the C and so the interval is described as a perfect 5th.

But that’s just the beginning. The real magic lies in the contrast between major and minor chords. To demonstrate this, try out a Major ‘I’ chord next to a minor ‘IV’ and ‘V’. Listen to how the sound darkens when you jump from the ‘I’ chord to the ‘IV’ chord. Listen to how things brighten as you shift from the minor ‘V
